Preloved: Riviera 5400 Sports Yacht

This well-appointed Riv is everything you’ve been looking for, even if you haven’t started looking yet.

One of the greatest high performance motor vehicles ever created is the McLaren F1, a stunningly styled sports car with outstanding performance (over 386kph) and a leader in the use of high tech design and construction. A unique feature of the F1 is its central driving position with passenger seats either side. This Riviera 5400 Sports Yacht could easily claim a number of direct comparisons with the outstanding McLaren in design, high tech construction, sleek styling, excellent performance, and a central helm position.

Actually, the helm is offset slightly to starboard, allowing for more generous guest seating to port on lovingly upholstered lounges, whilst a companionway to below decks accommodations is to starboard. The result is a clever placement for the fortunate skipper who is right at the front of the main saloon surrounded by large windows for grand visibility in all directions.

From a magnificent helm seat, the skipper looks over a curved-top console packed with dual 17-inch multi-function displays, a Garmin Closed Array 4kW HD Radar, Garmin GSD 24 Depth Sounder and a Volvo/Garmin Autopilot, whilst conveniently located to the right is a dual-stick binnacle for the throttles/shifts to the twin Volvo IPS 950 powerplants. Those binnacle controls are supplemented by a single intuitive-use joystick for oh-so-easy manoeuvring of the shapely Riviera. Another such joystick control is in the cockpit to make berthing a worry-free operation.

The Volvo IPS 950 packages a straight-six 10.8-litre twin-turbo common-rail 725hp diesel engine with a through-hull connected steerable drive pod featuring dual counter-rotating forward-facing puller-props that operate efficiently in a stream of undisturbed water. Two such IPS 950s offer unmatched economy, performance and controllability through Volvo’s Electronic Vessel Control system. The result is an efficient cruise speed for the 5400 of around 25 knots and a top velocity of 32 knots depending on load and conditions.

Riviera has designed the 5400 to be equally at home as a calm-water entertainer, as a relaxation haven for the owner and family, or as a genuine coastal cruiser with renowned seakeeping abilities and a comfortable ride offering stability in most all conditions. The ‘Sports Yacht’ term implies sporting performance blended with luxury, and the 5400 matches that implication with an added sense of adventure from the versatile potential of its inclusions and capabilities.

The experienced owner knew from running previous Rivieras what he needed when optioning up this 5400, which he purchased new. He has enjoyed cruising both Sydney Harbour and Pittwater as family aquatic playgrounds while hosting appreciative guests and seeing his youngsters having great fun exploring bays and inlets in the tender. Some changed circumstances and other interests for the youngsters have led to this opportunity for a new owner.

Maintenance has been carefully executed with a recent service and with regular washing and waxing to keep that ‘as new’ appearance. The engines and drives are still under warranty with just 120 hours recorded.

Aft of the helm position, the spacious saloon has L-shaped lounges to port around a table and the galley is to starboard behind a mini breakfast bar. The light colours of the upholstery and flooring add to the atmosphere of bright freshness made possible by the large windows and the overhead sunroof, and the contrasting darker woodwork of the cabinetry only emphasises the excellent craftsmanship that’s typical of Riviera yachts.

The galley has generous workbench space and storage along with a SMEG two-burner stovetop, Miele microwave oven, Fisher & Paykel dishwasher and two Isotherm fridges plus a freezer and wine cooler. The aft lateral workbench of the galley faces out to the cockpit with a swing-up window, which opens to allow easy serving of sustenances to open-air guests on immediately adjacent L-shaped lounges or on the transverse lounge at the back of the cockpit. Among other useful inclusions for entertaining in this area are two electronic barbecues, a fridge and icemaker. Overhead is an extended awning for shade while the sole of the cockpit is in appealing teak with hatches to the well-engineered engine bay underneath.

Also below, behind the engine bay, is a garage for the 3.3-metre Williams jet tender and across the transom of the 5400 is a large boarding platform, lined with teak and protected by removable stainless safety rails. Similar rails swoop in an elegant arc along the side decks and continue right to the stem encircling the foredeck which has a central sunpad for relaxing in a sheltered bay. The deck hardware is properly designed and sized for its task, and intelligently located.

Below the foredeck, the forward cabin has twin berths while the owner’s stateroom is full-beam amidships with an island king-bed, a side lounge, extensive storage and, of course, its own ensuite. Between the two cabins is a day lounge area with a bathroom that serves for everyone through the day as well as for the forward cabin.  The fit and finish throughout the 5400, and the choice of fabrics and floor coverings, are all very pleasing.

Other features throughout this Riviera Sports Yacht include air conditioning, multiple (satellite-fed) TVs, video camera feeds from the engine room, cockpit and foredeck/anchor, Foxtel entertainment, a desalination unit, a winching system for easy retrieval of the tender into its garage over the hydraulic boarding platform, underwater lights, a Netgear phone/internet facility with booster, and more.

The 5400 is all set to go, in paramount condition and offering a wealth of opportunities for relaxation, entertainment and voyaging to local or distant shores.
