Preloved: Maritimo M59

Maritimo's M59 offers a whole lot of boat for your buck

The first indication of the extraordinary space inside this Maritimo M59 is clearly visible as you approach. While retaining an appealing appearance with a graceful gun’l line and streamlining to the aft shapes of the side windows, the M59 is high. It is also beamy, at 5.46 metres, and the combination of dimensions gives generous headroom and floor-space for the enclosed flybridge, the saloon and below-deck accommodations while additional window area simply streams light everywhere inside.

There’s no lower helm and that serves only to emphasise the wonders to be found on the flybridge. Access is by work-of-art internal stairs leading up from inside the aft port quarter of the saloon — not from the cockpit and so fully protected in any conditions. Enclosed flybridges are not unusual, but the air-conditioned comfort and facilities in the M59’s make it a stand-out.

The helm position has commanding views from its high starboard-forward location. Beside it is a sofa so crew can lounge and converse with the skipper, and it is convertible to a berth making a magnificent eyrie spot to sleep or relax. Behind the helm is a small dinette with L-shaped sofas and a neat table. A door aft-port leads out to an open deck partially shaded by the extended hardtop.

The skipper and first mate/navigator are granted plush helm chairs and look over a clean dash layout that includes triple NSO19 19-inch displays, an RS12 VHF, a GS15 GPS, a BSM-1 Broadband Sounder with B258 Transducer, a 4G Broadband Radar and an AP28 Autopilot. It’s good to see a traditional compass too. The wheel is triple-spoked inside a wood/leather rim and of a size and style that would look totally at home in a luxury sportscar.

Sea trials of this model gave pleasing results with smooth passage through choppy conditions and a dream ride along inshore waterways. An easy cruise around 16 kts should give a range of up to 500 nautical miles. Top speed depending on load and conditions would be around 28 kts. Power comes from a pair of shaft-drive Volvo D13 six-cylinder diesels rated at 800 horsepower turning five-blade Nibral props.

From the dock, boarding is across a teak platform with the optional hydraulic lift/lower extension that gives plenty of room for watersports or lounging around. At night, deep blue LED lights give a mystic aura to the water beyond the removable stainless safety rails. A lazarette has generous storage for aquatic playthings or for a small dinghy — primary storage for the tender is on the foredeck with a 350 kilogram hydraulic davit for launch/retrieval of the AB centre console dinghy.

Steps either side of the platform run up to the matching teak-soled cockpit with aft three-quarter lounge and table. Full-width folding doors make a flow-through connection to the saloon with an island bar leading into an L-shaped galley to starboard. The galley is equipped with a Miele four-burner cooktop, a fridge/freezer, a clever oven-grill-microwave combination unit, a dishwasher, pantry and plenty of storage and work space. It is all ideally centrally-positioned to serve the cockpit and the spacious U-shaped lounges around the forward-starboard dinette as well as up those beautiful stairs to the flybridge.

There’s a useful grab-rail along the outer edge of the island bar for the passage between it and the flybridge stairs; the aft area of the saloon is finished to a high standard with excellent cabinetry in light-coloured timbers matched by the flooring, while further forward between the dinette and sofas to port is carpeted with upholstery in colour-matched fabrics all highlighted by darker trims. It’s all rather opulent, but exudes hospitality too. A 40-inch TV lifts from the entertainment unit.

Three welcoming staterooms are found down the companionway. The master is full-beam amidships with queen bed, make-up vanity or study, a dressing space and ensuite. Forward is a VIP cabin with island double berth and ensuite-style access to the second bathroom. A guest cabin has twin berths that easily convert to a double. The sofa on the flybridge that converts into another double berth gives total sleeping accommodations for six-plus-two.

There may not be a lower helm, but there is a set of engine controls in the portside of the cockpit for easy berthing and other optional features on this particular M59 include hydraulic proportional Side Power bow and stern thrusters, a Bose Acoustimass entertainment system with nine-inch Simrad display, engine management data via NMEA 2000 showing on the Simrad screens, Foxtel showing on helm and cockpit Simrad screens which also take feeds from engine room, saloon, anchor and cockpit cameras, a bar fridge on the flybridge, an Idromar 130L/h watermaker with a sand filter, Rosewood flooring with ebony strips in the bathroom and much more.

All up this Maritimo M59 makes for a delightful package for local or extended cruising and entertaining, fishing too if desired, and the blend of strong construction, seaworthiness, luxury, spaciousness and extensive  facilities and equipment will only add to the new owner’s pleasure and justifiable pride in possession.
