Review: Galeon 640 Fly

If you're looking to sink some cash into an ocean-going entertainer, then there's a good chance you'll want something that stands out in a tasteful, un-obnoxious kind of way. Whether you're a sun-lover, a technophile or just someone who appreciates well-considered design, the Galeon 640 Fly is likely to tick your boxes.

This forward-thinking vessel was awarded the title of 'Most Innovative Yacht' at the 2018 Cannes Yachting Festival, thanks to its abundance of clever features that make life on board a delight. The first feature that demands attention is known as ‘Beach Mode’. This fun-sounding function manifests in the form of two additional fold down balconies that provide additional deck space and something they call a breakfast bar.

There are generous lounge and dining areas on the top-deck, cockpit and within the saloon. The bow-deck area is accessed by stepping through an electric front window, which splits the wind shield down the middle and adds an extra level of flow throughout the space. Just about every table and lounge can be reconfigured for different uses, including the rotating cockpit sofa which can seat up to eight people.

Leading below decks is what's been referred to as 'an innovative two-way system' (we're assuming that means the stairs go both up and down, which is handy) that allows for three full beam cabins. The sleeping quarters have been lavishly appointed, as is the case throughout the boat, with plush furnishings, intricate cabinetry and carefully positioned lighting. All of the internal spaces give off a sense of stylish, contemporary comfort.

There's no doubt about it, there's a lot going on with this boat, and we have to admit that all this flashy functionality seems to have come at the cost of external aesthetic harmony. Perhaps not the brand's best looking design, it seems as though it's been cobbled together with bits from here and there. But of course, this next-gen yacht is about experience and we have no doubt that time spent aboard will not soon be forgotten, and when the word gets out old friends will be emerging from the woodwork hoping for an invite to the next shindig.
