NSW Maritime issues warnings

The NSW Maritime issued a dangerous weather warning over the weekend after two boats rolled while attempting to cross Ballina bar on Sunday.

The two separate incidents occurred early Sunday morning, and all four passengers involved were lucky to make it ashore without serious injury. Both vessels were runabouts, and were attempting to cross the bar at low tide in 1.5m swell.

NSW regional manager North, Jim Green, issued the warning for the Mid-North Coast of NSW, advising skippers to be responsible and to take extra care.

“It is strongly recommended that no crossing is attempted at any time on the falling tide or within two hours following the bottom of the tide,” said Green.

Skippers are urged to consider the conditions before heading onto exposed or offshore waters, and to ensure that all passengers onboard are wearing lifejackets.
