After 12 years in service six still capable police vessels are being replaced by the NSW Government. They're available through Australian Independent Shipbrokers (AIS) who handled the sale of the previous seven decommissioned vessels – they're well aware of the multiple uses these 16-metre hulls are suited to. “They are strongly built and the engines [have been] regularly serviced,” said the Sydney-based broker. There are six vessels to be sold in total, based across the NSW coast (vessel WPT21 is in Port Stephens, WPT22 Sydney, WP23 Port Kembla, WPT24 Botany Bay, WPT25 Eden and WPT26 Coffs Harbour).
At deck level, the vast aft section is ideal for sports fishers, with space for a rigid inflatable. An overhead davit swings out for launch, and there's a large transom door with swim platform (or marlin board, if you prefer). Emergency gear includes two Austral-made towing reels with heavy-duty warps. The foredeck is bordered by tall metal guard rails and heavy duty cleats. There's a quality Australian-made Muir windlass attached to a Bruce anchor with spare Danforth. At flybridge level, second console controls with triple seating are completely weatherproofed by a spray screen. There are also two six-man life rafts and heavy duty davit.
Above, the high gantry maximises the range of the Furuno radar and VHF/AIS system. Most electronics are Furuno, including the Navpilot 500 autopilot. Maxsea charting is used and there's an Inmarsat satellite receiver.
At bridgedeck level, the main console layout uses the entire forward bulkhead for navigation equipment, allowing several crew to work in this area with the large navigation table just behind. The starboard-side helm features twin throttles for the Caterpillar engines. Electronic Screens include engine data displays and 16-inch Furunos on each side of the main console.
Below decks are four bunks and a dinette area in the bow. The galley has twin electric hobs, a microwave, household-style fridge and a single sink with mixer tap.
The layout includes water tight bulkheads and sealable doors. Looking aft, the engine room houses two six-cylinder shaft drive Caterpillars that each produce 494kW power via Twindisc gearboxes. Across the six vessels for sale, engine hours vary by about 1,000 hours, from a minimum of 3,066 on vessel Fearless to a maximum of 4,323 on vessel Vanguard. All engines have met their service milestones and are not due for rebuilds for considerable time.
Prospective buyers are invited to inspect and register interest with delivery expected in April. Interested buyers are invited to inspect the vessels by arrangement and thereafter make an offer.
