Consistently acclaimed for statement-making design and finish, the New Zealand-based builder of bespoke family-friendly sportfishers underlines its dockside appeal with miserly open-water performance, relentless innovation and a 24/7 approach to ongoing service.

Newcomers to the brand remark on its superyacht-like quality and are startled to learn it’s aluminium. The similarities are deliberate. Founder Jason Dickey’s marine career was shaped by the superyacht world and it influences many aspects of the company’s activities.

Aluminium is light and strong, allowing the construction of fast, fuel-efficient vessels to the highest standards of precision and finish. Superyacht construction and maintenance demand the utmost attention to detail and first-class customer relations, and these principles are now cornerstones of the Dickey workplace culture.

Led by husband-and-wife team Jason and Tristin Dickey, the family-owned company values talent and fosters craftsman-like ideals. Every hull handed over to an owner mirrors the pride built into it. The result: exquisite, high-performance vessels loved by clients, clients who become friends, friends who become family.

CHAPTER 10

In Dickey Boats’ New Zealand home, second-hand Dickey’s are rare, often only offered to the market when the owner is upgrading to a larger model. Such is the case with Chapter 10, whose owner looks forward to the late 2018 delivery of a flagship Dickey Semifly 45 – Chapter 11.

Commissioned in February 2015, Chapter 10 presents as immaculately looked after and serviced as per the Dickey Boat new vessel requirements.

As with all the company’s vessels Chapter 10 is built and finished to the highest marine standards. The team’s own Space Frame system–interlocking ring frames, stringers, girders and longitudinals provide an ultra-stiff matrix encased in a six-millimetre hull skin.

The distinguishing Dickey bow sheer is intentionally low volume and ultra-fine–a potent combination contributing significantly to the vessel’s soft ride and high-speed capabilities in larger seas.

Class-leading design and exemplary build quality are backed by the highest standards of fitout to ensure long-term owner satisfaction. Indeed, Dickey Boats fabricates as many components in-house as possible to ensure quality control and the availability of parts in the future. A modified sunshade and radar mast fold down to allow easy garaging; a practicality complementing a highly specified and immaculately finished performance fishing vessel.

As a trailerable gamefisher, Chapter 10 excels. Clean, unobstructed transom lines and the sub-floor installation of a 260hp Mercury TDI stern drive (rather than an outboard) increases buoyancy aft, enhancing the reversing and tight-quarters manoeuvring capabilities of the impressive sportfisher. The cockpit is self-draining and finished in hard-wearing yet aesthetically pleasing Dek-King synthetic teak.

Foldaway cleats and a general preference for flush-mounted accessories keeps the working area snag-free, complementing the customised central fishing station complete with oversized fish processing boards, slide-away equipment boxes and an abundance of chillers.

Dickey Custom 850s fish at least five comfortably, as has been demonstrated by Trade-A-Boat during a 2014 exploration of New Zealand’s best trailerboats: Kiwi Kings. The story and video are worth exploring, especially if you enjoy watching pen-pushing journalists buckled over the transom by a stream of XOS kingfish.

DICKEY BOATS IN AUSTRALIA

Dickey Boats’ after-sales service is a well-established hallmark of the brand. With its long-term Australian following continuing to grow, the team is strengthening its ability to support local vessels.

Today, this support is anchored in Sydney where the company is also focusing its marketing activities. Last year’s Sydney International Boat Show was a landmark event for Dickey Boats, which has buoyed the team to make grander plans for bigger boats at the 2019 event.

The message continually reinforced is that Australians understand and value high-end boats, be it from a sportfishing, family or lifestyle-cruising viewpoint. The fuel efficiency, versatility and unique finish of the Dickey Boat proposition rings true with Australians, and the company looks forward to growing its fan-base and family around Australia.
