New Boating Safety Education Centre For Watsons Bay

The new centre includes a purpose-designed ramp and floating pontoon, allowing access to the water for children of all abilities.

It was created through a NSW government partnership with the BIA, Marine Teachers Association, Yachting NSW, Paddle NSW and Sailability.

Restoration work started last year and included refurbishment of the building, installation of change room facilities, boat storage on the lower floor and a large pontoon and ramp for the launching and recovery of vessels.

Much of the historical integrity of the Pilot Station was retained in the new building, thus ensuring this piece of Sydney’s maritime heritage lives on.

Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Duncan Gay said thousands of eager young sailors would benefit from the facility.

“It is critical children learn boating skills early and what better way to teach them than with other children and in an interactive and fun environment,” Gay said.

Minister for Disability Services John Ajaka noted the project would provide access to Sydney’s iconic harbour for children with disabilities.

“Everyone deserves to access one of the most beautiful harbours in the world – and through initiatives like this and organisations like Sailability – there are no boundaries,” Ajaka said.
