Superior Marina Planned for Victoria's Southwest

Floatation specialist Superior has secured the contract to construct a 70-berth marina in the coastal town of Portland, in southwest Victoria.

Catering for vessels up to 18m in length, along with a 40m tall ship, the Portland Harbour Marina development is part of the Portland Bay Coastal Infrastructure Plan.

Superior CEO John Hogan said the new development would complement the existing marina and swing moorings in the area.

“Being constructed at the Maritime Discovery Centre, the project is one of the largest Superior has undertaken in Victoria in recent times,” said Hogan.

“As with all of Superior’s marina construction projects, the Portland Harbour Marina will be developed in-line with sustainable best practice to ensure minimal impact on the environment and the community.”

Superior is using its Elite marina system for the project, utilising a heavy-duty concrete pontoon arrangement constructed using a solid monolithic floatation system, protected by a tough polyethylene skin. The specially-formulated concrete pontoon deck is smartly finished with a customised aluminium waler, which also incorporates a unique press-in bump rubber fender.

Glenelg Shire Council mayor Gilbert Wilson said the marina construction was a key part of the Stage One works.

“The project will result in new and improved tourism opportunities and better facilities for commercial and recreational fishing and boating,” Cr Wilson said. “It will open the door to a lot of opportunities, such as supporting ecotourism businesses like whale, seal and dolphin spotting charters.”

Superior anticipates a 20-week build-time for the project.
