NEWS - Better Boating Program applications for NSW

The NSW Government reports that 79 applications have been lodged for new recreational boating infrastructure projects, including 14 for boat ramp funding on Sydney Harbour, under its Better Boating Program (BBP).

Ports and Waterways Minister Joe Tripodi said public boating facilities are receiving another boost following this latest round of funding applications.

“Of the remaining 65 applications from regional NSW, most are from coastal councils and the Murray area, so the interest has come from across the State,” Tripodi said.

“Although the total number of applications is only slightly more than the 71 received in 2008-09, the value of this year’s funding requests is more than double what was sought last year,” he said.

Applications for the 2009-2010 Better Boating grants closed on July 31. The 65 funding requests lodged by regional councils, boating organisations and community groups totalled $7.1 million, while funding applications for Sydney Harbour boat ramps totalled $7.6 million.

Tripodi said up to $5 million will be made available this year through the Better Boating Program, an increase of $2 million on previous years.

“The funding increase announced in this year’s State Budget means the Government will provide a total of $25 million for boating infrastructure projects over the next five years,” said Tripodi.

“The program includes up to $2.5 million per year for regional infrastructure grants, with successful applications receiving up to 50 per cent of the total cost of a project.

“Funding of up to $1.5 million per year is also provided to improve the public boat ramp facilities in Sydney Harbour, covering up to 100 per cent of eligible total costs,” Tripodi said.

According to the Minister, the projects will be assessed initially at a regional level and independent assessment committees will meet next month to consider all of the submitted applications.

Successful applicants are expected to be announced before the end of 2009.

NSW Maritime utilises revenue raised from vessel registration and licence fees to help fund the grants program.
