Preloved: Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht 2017

The well-planned and beautifully finished interior of this 6000 Sport Yacht offers oodles of room for the whole crew.

Riviera’s designers had a lot of space to play with when laying out its top-of-the-line 6000 and such was their accomplishments, that strolling through the interior of this 63-footer gives the impression of an even larger vessel.

It helps that a practical three-cabin layout has been adopted belowdecks, leaving room for a delightful lounge area at the foot of the staircase.

While there are seemingly hectares of relaxation and entertaining areas on the main deck, it’s handy to have this additional indoor oasis of tranquility just a few steps away.

This space could also be a spot for youngsters to volubly exercise their right to play; either way it’s a discrete and convenient room to separate disparate groups onboard.

The lounge converts to an extra double berth if needed, and there’s an atrium over the whole area so it is naturally lit through the day.

That light and airy feel continues aft to the midships full-beam owner’s stateroom where clever ‘switch glass’ hull-side windows can be clear for light and views or, at the touch of a switch, become opaque for privacy.

A similar window separates the stateroom from its ensuite and there’s a walk-in dressing room and ‘retreat lounge’ as well.

The island queen bed is surrounded by generous storage cabinets and floor space while the carpets, fabrics and finish are pleasingly indulgent, although also easy to care for.

The VIP guest stateroom is forward with another island queen bed and ensuite, while the third cabin has twin berths and its own ensuite.

The high standard of finish, and the visual appeal of the chosen fabrics and timber panelling, are evident in all these sleeping accommodations, as indeed they are throughout the entire 6000 yacht.

MOVING ON UP

The staircase from this lower accommodation level leads toward the main saloon where a well-planned helm station is to starboard.

Although not quite matching the sightlines possible from a flybridge, visibility is nevertheless excellent and comfort assured on twin seats with flip-up bolsters to allow standing when preferred.

The wheel is located outboard and has been sensibly aligned with the throttles and Volvo IPS controls on a side panel.

The main dash is contemporary in its simplicity with twin large-screen colour displays able to present the full range of ship and engineering data to keep any skipper fully informed and aware of all onboard systems.

Those systems are dominated by the pair of Volvo IPS-950 propulsion plants. This well-proven design with its counter-rotating ‘puller’ props in steerable pods is known for delivering benefits such as lower noise and vibration, higher speeds and longer range as well as reduced consumption and emissions.

The IPS-950 features a 10.8L six-cylinder twin-turbodiesel engine rated at 725hp, and the two of these aboard this 6000 are barely run-in with only 260 hours recorded in their full service history — factory warranty remains applicable until March 2022.

They deliver a relaxed cruise at 25kt and a top end of 30kt along with a good cruising range from the 3300L tankage.

They also mean that this 6000 Sport Yacht, named Skagerrak after the famous waterway between Norway, Sweden and Denmark that links the North Sea through to the Baltic, is superbly maneuverable and responsive — the steerable IPS pods do away with any need for bow or stern thrusters.

OFFSHORE HERITAGE

Whether on short or long-haul voyaging, the skipper will derive significant pleasure from this yacht’s swift reactions to the controls.

For close-in handling, a remote set of controls is conveniently positioned within a panel on the port side of the aft cockpit.

Riviera is justifiably admired for the handling of its designs in offshore conditions, and the 6000 Sport Yacht will fulfill expectations in that regard on coastal voyages.

Its size is suitable for captain-owners with appropriate experience for a crewing couple, although quarters for a professional crew could be accommodated forward of the engine room should that be desired.

In the saloon, flowing back from the helm station is an entertainer’s bar opposite U-shaped lounges around a high-low table for inside dining (another which converts to a double berth as required).

The splendidly equipped galley is aft again on the port side and ideally positioned between the interior entertaining and relaxing areas and the generously-proportioned teak-soled cockpit.

A huge hopper window swings up from the galley beside the saloon door to connect the interior and exterior spaces.

Both the saloon and cockpit have sunroofs, and the galley has a skylight, all of these features adding further to that impression of this being an even larger vessel than its dimensions would initially suggest.

The cockpit has more comfortable lounges (convertible to another double berth) around a table whilst centrally aft is an entertainment facility with barbecue.

Steps either side lead down to the hydraulically-actuated swimplatform and neatly tucked in the garage is the 3.2m AB RIB tender with a 20hp Mercury outboard.

Safe side decks lead to the foredeck where a larger-than-usual sunlounger is situated with

a neat fold-down shade canopy. The safety railings and deck hardware are efficiently sized and located.

With an extensive list of quality inclusions for advanced navigation, engineering installations, entertainment and housekeeping activities, Skagerrak is fully prepared for the immediate enjoyment of its next owners.

Its versatility will facilitate relaxed fun on local waters or exploration throughout any of the myriad Australian coastal playgrounds that are readily within range.
