Pre-Loved: Maritimo M51

As summer turns to autumn and the days start getting cooler, the thoughts of many boat lovers turn to the tropical north. Lazy days spent bobbing in secluded azure bays, warm water, white sands – this sounds extremely appealing when compared to a dreary winter in the southern states.

You’ll need a boat though, and sadly the lead time from many of Australia’s top boatbuilders means buyers could be well into 2020 before setting sail. Luckily, the answer comes to us this month in the form of a near new flybridge cruiser from the esteemed Maritimo stable.

Together with the time-proven Maritimo hull design and shaft-drive reliability, this M51 flybridge yacht offers a healthy complement of extras above the standard package.

For starters there is an expansive teak-lined swim platform with hydraulic high-low function – perfect for ocean-side drinks, dive access or a kids’ play area. A barbecue and floodlights further add to the amenity of this aft cockpit area, while below decks, more additions await.

Tucked in next to the powerful Volvo Pentas is an Idromar watermaker, turning out 130 litres an hour to keep you well-supplied with fresh water in remote anchorages. But even better is the Seakeeper 6 gyro stabiliser, which virtually eliminates hull rolling both underway and at anchor.

Docking your 16-metre yacht is made simple through the inclusion of a Dockmate remote control which synchronises the bow and stern thrusters with the two engines for effortless manoeuvrability. 

The captain will further enjoy Maritimo’s new-look helm upstairs in the skylounge, where the suite of Simrad electronics sits just above the engine monitor for ultimate ease-of-use, inspired by Maritimo’s race boat experience. The economical 670 horsepower Volvo Pentas are engineered to work efficiently in conjunction with the shaft-drives, providing admirable range on this bluewater explorer. The fuel tanks hold in excess of 3,000 litres and sea trials have demonstrated a wide economy curve, meaning at cruising speeds of 16-22 knots, owners can expect a comfortable range of around 400 nautical miles from their M51.

Downstairs from the climate-controlled helm lounge (and its electric sunroof), this M51’s new owners will find both style and functionality in abundance. Descending via the signature interior stairwell brings you to the forward saloon lounge and central galley. These areas feel light and airy with panoramic views and cross-flow ventilation is aided by sliding windows.

The rear bi-fold doors can be opened fully to create an expanse of al fresco entertaining options and there will be plenty of memorable meals under the stars when guests come together around the teak dining table.

The accommodation deck offers overnight berths for six guests, plus an extra modular double in the skylounge. The staterooms are comprised of a roomy forward VIP berth and starboard-side twin bunks which share a bathroom. The full-beam master is accessed down a handful of stairs and features a 45 degree-offset bed, maximising available space in this plush cabin.

The net result is a glamorous, yet hard working vessel from Maritimo and one that will be equally at home hosting glitzy cocktail parties in the harbour or exploring the outer isles of the Great Barrier Reef – so go on, make her yours.
