Destination: Orpheus Island, Qld

Located off the coast between Cairns and Townsville in northern Queensland, Orpheus Island is a tropical destination situated on the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. The island consists of 1,300 hectares of national parkland, while its pristine waters are fringed with coral reefs and filled with colourful fish and curious marine life.

At just 11km long and 1km wide, Orpheus Island is best explored by foot. The island offers endless opportunites to bushwalk through breathtaking Australian eucalypt forest, while this veritable paradise can be viewed in all its splendor from one of the many scenic lookouts adorning the island. The beauty of the island can also be witnessed from above via the scenic helicopter flight which delivers vistors from both Cairns and Townsville.

Day trips from Orpheus Island to the outer reef of the iconic Great Barrier Reef can easily be organised for those interested in snorkelling or diving this natural wonder. However, those intent on staying on dry land will relish the vast white sand coast line, perfect for sunbaking, reading, picknicking, or enjoying a cocktail while watching the spectacular sunset.

NATIONAL PARK

The National Park is an absolute treasure trove of natural wonders with its sheltered bays, rocky headlands, and granite bedrock formed from volcanic rocks. Numerous mammals, reptiles and birds can be found in the park, including terrestrial birds like the orange-footed scrubfowl, while dry woodlands, rainforest and native flora are in abundance.
